Freedom Calls
The photographs are on the romance of light with the emotions of the inmates of the Madras Central Jail, a colonial stockade, set up by the British East India Company in 1837, to house political prisoners and freedom fighters and later converted as a Central Jail during the period of India as a part of the British Empire.
In the suite of photographs light is the interlocutor between hope and despair, freedom and confinement. Light is the poet, weaving its romance against the stark walls of the grey prison cell.
Light is the paint on the canvas of life, its shades and strengths reflecting the mood of the prisoner in the cell.
The photographs use the streaming and waning light to emphasize the triumph of the human spirit in its quest to be free.
