Tale of 2 Cities
George.K’s works depict reality as seen by all. His style as a realist places him alongside the new generation of ‘neo-realists’ who have made a significant impact on the contemporary visual art scenario. Hailing from a financial background, this business-professionalturned-artist started his exploration into the world of visual arts with photography and paintings. These photographic compositions have become the starting point in his career as a painter. Working with a techno savvy camera he has a natural flair for colour and composition and he uses this ability to its utmost to create dramatic images. An emerging artist with immense potential he is certainly an artist to watch out for.
In this show ‘A tale of two cities’, is of George.K’s photographs of Srinagar and Benares creating an interesting dialogue between the two places. In the series of photographs on the Benares he captures life in the city which is visited by pilgrims, monks and tourists. His ability lies in juxtaposing realism with a passion for colours which the mechanical apparatus has caught with great precision. While the Benares photographs capture the frantic activity and humdrum of a pilgrimage city like Benares, in contrast his photographs of Kashmir are permeated by a poignant stillness. He makes his statement on the recent history of the region by capturing buildings in their solid, spectacular yet ravaged state. Inspired by the music of Beatles and Bob Dillion, he superimposes abstract reactions of colour to the tune of the Beatles on the almost monochromatic photographs of the stone sentinels of Srinagar. Hence like the German artist Gerhard Richter he combines two different modes of representation namely the abstract and the realistic to create a visually stimulating effect. The monochromatic colouring with touches of red reflect the looming sadness of the region.
